Course Descriptions

Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting

This six-hour in-depth course covers the information needed to recognize physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect, as well as the mandated reporting procedures.  It includes extensive case studies and discussion.
Many professionals are required by Ohio law to report suspicions of child abuse or neglect. Mandated reporters include attorneys, health care professionals, child care providers, teachers, social workers, counselors, and clergy among others.

Appropriate for anyone who works with children or in a child-serving organization, this training meets the in-service requirements of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services for child abuse recognition and reporting training.

Objectives of this training are:
  • To establish a working definition of abuse and neglect.
  • To recognize behavioral as well as physical indicators of abuse/neglect.
  • To learn the legal obligations and procedures for reporting child abuse and neglect.
  • To recognize the inter-generational aspects of such abuse and neglect, and the impact this has upon human development.
All participants will receive a certificate of completion. Continuing education credits (CEUs) for social workers and counselors are available for an additional $10 fee.

Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting REFRESHER

This three-hour course covers the basics of recognizing and reporting all forms of child abuse. It is designed as a refresher course for the six-hour class and is required for all licensed child care providers every three years. All participants will receive a certificate of completion. Continuing education credits (CEUs) for social workers and counselors are available for an additional $10 fee.

Understanding and Responding to Children’s Sexual Behaviors
This course provides an overview of children’s sexual behavior from normal to problematic, from early childhood through pre-adolescence. It provides guidelines for appropriate responses and techniques for interacting with children presenting these behaviors. All participants will receive a certificate of completion. Continuing education credits (CEUs) for social workers and counselors are available for an additional $10 fee.

    Personal Safety Skills
    For children ages 3-10

Children can face unsafe and dangerous situations in many settings, from peer pressure and bullying at school to sexual abuse in their own homes. The best way to keep children safe, particularly from sexual abuse, is to empower them with the knowledge that they can say “no” to an adult or older child and how to seek help when they have a problem or concern.

Reaching students at a young age is critical. By helping young children to stop abuse before it starts, or learn how to get help if they have already been abused, they will be better able to perform in school and become healthier adults. Child abuse leads to a variety of behavioral issues that prevent children from learning in school and, more importantly, forming strong relationships with the important people in their lives. The overall goal of the program is to enhance the awareness of abuse issues and to increase the skills of parents, teachers, and children to ensure prevention and reduction of children’s risk from abuse.

This program is presented in the school or child care center, and includes three half-hour sessions for the children and a one-hour session for the teachers. The children are taught what they can do if an adult or another child acts inappropriately or makes them feel uncomfortable. The curriculum includes songs and books to help children understand their feelings, their ownership of their bodies, what touches are inappropriate and what they can do about them. Children receive a booklet reviewing the personal safety curriculum to reinforce the program. Children take the book home to read and discuss with their parents.
